What Type Of Sewing Machine Should I Get?

I have wanted a sewing machine for quite some time now but I am unsure of what type to get.
I used to know how to use them & I’m sure I can teach myself again but I have no idea what one I need. I will use it to make clothes & also curtains for my room. If anyone can give me some advice on a good brand or model to get I would greatly appreciate that.
I don’t want to spend too much but i want it to be a good one that will last a while.
Thanks!

You have a list of what you want to sew, add your budget to the list & start visiting sewing machine dealers.
Take notes, then buy the machine you like best from the dealer you like best.
If you are a minor, take a parent or guardian with you so the sales staff will take you seriously.
A simple mechanical sewing machine that includes a zig-zag stitch will work well for the type of sewing you want to be able to do.
Tell the staff what you want to be able to make with the sewing machine & that you have a budget. This way they will not waste your time & theirs showing you machines over your budget or have features (like machine embroidery) that you do not want ($$$).
Take care of the machine as indicated in the user’s manual & a new machine will last a very long time.
New machines have what is referred to as a “short shank” with snap-on feet. Accessories, if necessary are affordable.
Ask them to demonstrate the following:
Making a buttonhole – take a button with you & ask them to do the demo with the button you have (if they do not have one).
Sewing over heavy fabrics (like hemming jeans as this will give you an idea of how much power the machine has).
The blind hem (you want a subtle finish & not long stitches showing on the outside of the garment.
Then you test drive the machine.
The dealer will provide one free “get acquainted” lesson & then may offer lessons and/or classes should you be interested.
A sewing machine dealer should be pleasant & helpful. Assist you when you have a question & service the machine as needed.
If you do not like the dealer, dont buy from him/her & go to another shop.
Once your get your very own sewing machine home, open the user’s manual, lay it next to the sewing machine & go step-by-step reading & applying each feature & you will quickly learn the characteristics of the machine & not have any problems.

Singer has always been a great machine. These days they all offer so many option that most of us never us. I would suggested going to a fabric store that sells sewing machines. The clerks in these store seems to more helpful (and knowledgeable) then those in larger appliance type stores, Tell them what you’ll be using for & they will find the machines for you. Most will also offer short class to familiarize you with your purchase. These places are a little pricier so it’s an option to get your info from they & make your purchase at Walmart. (Just dont plan on getting any service there)
